'Toxic gas attack' in Syria kills at least 58 people

KONFRONTASI-At least 58 people, including nine children, have been killed in an air raid that released "toxic gas" on the rebel-held Syrian town of Khan Sheikhoun, doctors and monitoring groups have said.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said the attack caused many people to choke or faint, and some had foam coming from their mouths, citing medical sources who described the symptoms as possible signs of a gas attack.

Syria's warring sides trade insults after Geneva talks

KONFRONTASI-Negotiators from Syria's government and opposition traded insults on Friday, calling each other "terrorists" and "adolescents" after an eight-day round of peace talks in Geneva.

The two sides do not meet but negotiate via U.N. mediator Staffan de Mistura, saving their liveliest invective for the TV cameras after each meeting with him.

Turkey ends 'Euphrates Shield' operation in Syria

KONFRONTASI-Turkey has officially ended the "Euphrates Shield" military operation it launched in Syria last August, Prime Minister Binali Yildirim said on Wednesday, but suggested there might be more cross-border campaigns to come.

Turkey sent troops, tanks and warplanes to support Free Syrian Army (FSA) rebels, push ISIL fighters away from its border and stop the advance of Kurdish militia fighters.

US-backed forces 'capture' Tabqa airbase from ISIL

KONFRONTASI-A US-backed alliance of Syrian Kurdish and Arab fighters has captured a strategic airbase from ISIL in northern Syria in the first major victory for the group since the US airlifted the forces behind enemy lines last week. 

The Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) announced on Sunday that they captured the Tabqa airbase, 45km west of Raqqa, the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) group's de facto capital in Syria.

KONFRONTASI-Ledakan kedua mengguncang kawasan wisata Rabweh di Damaskus, Suriah. Ledakan ini cuma satu jam setelah pemboman bunuh diri terjadi di Istana Kehakiman, di Damaskus Tengah, Rabu, dan menewaskan lebih dari 30 orang.

Keterangan awal menunjukkan pemboman di Rabweh, satu kawasan wisata dengan banyak restoran di Damaskus Barat, dilancarkan seorang pemboman bunuh diri atau alat peledak, dengan sasaran yang tidak diketahui.

Russian-backed Syria talks derailed as rebels boycott

KONFRONTASI-Russian-led peace talks on Syria were derailed on Tuesday as rebels backed by Turkey boycotted a third round of meetings in Kazakhstan and the Kremlin indicated there were international divisions over the process.

Russia, Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's most powerful ally, said the rebels' reasons for staying away were unconvincing and their decision came as a surprise. Describing the rebels as Turkish proxies, the Syrian government envoy said Ankara had broken "its commitments" to the Astana process.

'Air strikes kill 11 civilians' in Hama province

KONFRONTASI-Air strikes have killed at least 11 civilians and wounded dozens in ISIL-held central Syrian village in Hama province, according to a monitor.

Rami Abdel Rahman, the head of the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR), said "the raids targeted a livestock market in the village of Oqayrabat" that is held by the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) group.

"They are probably Russian air strikes," he said.

Al Jazeera could not independently confirm the Britain-based SOHR's report.

Syrian government forces enter Palmyra, drive back Islamic State: monitors

KONFRONTASI-Russian-backed Syrian government forces and their allies fought their way into Palmyra on Wednesday, driving back Islamic State militants who have held the historic city since December, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights monitoring group reported.

A Hezbollah-run media outlet earlier reported that the Syrian army and its allies had recaptured the Palmyra citadel, on the city's western outskirts, and seized a modern palatial complex to the southwest.

Islamic State car bomb kills more than 50 in northwest Syria

KONFRONTASI-An Islamic State car bomb killed more than 50 people on Friday in a Syrian village held by rebels, a war monitor said, a day after the jihadist group was driven from its last stronghold in the area.

The blast in the village of Sousian hit a security checkpoint controlled by rebels fighting under the Free Syrian Army (FSA) banner.

Israel won't return Golan Heights to Syria, Netanyahu says

KONFRONTASI - Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu says the Tel Aviv regime will never end its decades-long occupation of Syria's Golan Heights.

“I want all of you to come to Israel…. I want you to walk the streets of the Old City in Jerusalem (al-Quds), hike in the Golan Heights. By the way, the Golan will never go back to Syria. It will always be a part of Israel,” Netanyahu said during a meeting with his Australian counterpart Malcolm Turnbull in Sydney on Thursday.
