Hong Kong police nab several people in demo against China traders

KONFRONTASI - Hong Kong security forces have arrested several people demonstrating against the increasing number of traders from mainland China.

On Sunday, over 100 people staged a demonstration inside a shopping mall in the town of Tuen Mun in the New Territories to protest against the rising number of parallel traders from China who have allegedly disrupted the normal daily life in the town.

Hong Kong police used pepper spray to disperse protesters and arrested a number of them when the demonstrators headed into the shopping malls.

US will take measures against new China cybersecurity regulations: Obama

KONFRONTASI - The Obama administration says the US will take necessary measures to protect the American private sector against the alleged cyber threats posed by China.

“On cybersecurity, we will take necessary actions to protect our businesses and defend our networks against cyber-theft of trade secrets for commercial gain whether by private actors or the Chinese government,” according to President Barack Obama’s new National Security Strategy.

Argentina's President Mocks Chinese Accent In Tweet During State Visit

AP-Argentina's President Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner drew fierce criticism this week for a tweet mocking the Chinese accent.

The president of the South American nation swapped the letters "R" and "L" in a tweet about a conference with 1,000 businessmen that she attended. The message translates to: "Did they come for lice or petloleum?"

Fernandez sent the message to her 3.53 million followers during a recent visit to China.

The US Trade Deficit reflected a sputtering global economy. U.S.-China trade deficit fell 5.5 percent to $28.3 billion.

WASHINGTON - The U.S. trade deficit in December widened sharply to its highest level since 2012 as a stronger dollar appeared to suck in imports and weigh on exports, which could see the fourth-quarter economic growth estimate revised lower.The politically sensitive U.S.-China trade deficit fell 5.5 percent to $28.3 billion.

The Commerce Department said on Thursday the trade deficit jumped 17.1 percent to $46.6 billion, the largest since November 2012. It was the biggest percentage increase since July 2009 and also reflected a sputtering global economy.

China jails former bank official for life over corruption

KONFRONTASI - A Chinese court has sentenced a former executive of one of the country’s main state banks to life in prison for accepting millions of dollars in bribes, including works of art and gold bars.

According to a statement by the Jiangsu High People’s Court on Wednesday, the former vice president of Agricultural Bank of China (ABC), Yang Kun, has been given the life sentence for taking bribes worth 30.8 million yuan (about USD 5.0 million).

Philippines protests Chinese ramming of 3 fishing boats

KONFRONTASI-The Philippines protested to Beijing on Wednesday after a Chinese coast guard ship allegedly rammed and damaged three Philippine fishing boats and endangered the lives of fishermen last week at a disputed shoal in the South China Sea.

The Department of Foreign Affairs in Manila also said it lodged a separate protest with Beijing over the collection of endangered giant clams by Chinese fishermen, destroying in the process coral outcrops at Scarborough Shoal off the northwestern Philippines.

Both incidents occurred last month, Philippine officials said.

US dollar falls on weaker US economic growth, China, EU data

KONFRONTASI - The US dollar fell against major currencies on Monday amid fears about the global economic outlook following a sharp slowdown in the US economy and disappointing data from China and Europe.

The euro rose to $1.1303 from $1.1284, and to 132.97 yen from 132.70 yen in afternoon trading at the New York stock exchange. The dollar fell to 117.59 yen from 118.34 yen on Thursday.

The dollar struggled against the yen and euro as the US economic growth slowed sharply in the fourth quarter of last year as a wider trade deficit and weak business spending offset growth.
