Trump rules out peace talks with Taliban
KONFRONTASI - President Donald Trump says the United States is not ready to hold peace talks with Taliban militants, following a wave of massive terrorist attacks in Kabul, Afghanistan’s capital.
"I don't think we are prepared to talk right now," Trump said on Monday.
"We don't want to talk with the Taliban," he said. "They are killing people left and right, innocent people."
"There may be a time but it's going to be a long time,” the American president added.
Kabul on Monday suffered its third major assault in recent days, as gunmen launched a pre-dawn attack on an army outpost guarding a military academy in the Afghan capital.
The Daesh terrorist group – not the Taliban -- claimed responsibility of the attack that killed at least 11 Afghan soldiers and wounded another 16.
The latest instance of violence comes as Kabul is still reeling from a car bomb attack, which targeted foreign embassies and government buildings on Saturday and left over 100 dead. That attack was claimed by the Taliban.
On January 20, Taliban militants stormed Kabul's Intercontinental Hotel and killed at least 25 people, the majority of them foreigners, including Americans.
Militants have stepped up their assaults against Afghan security personnel and foreigners in recent months in Afghanistan.
Many parts of the country remain plagued by militancy despite the presence of thousands of foreign troops.
The United States -- under Republican George W. Bush’s presidency -- and its allies invaded Afghanistan on October 7, 2001 as part of Washington’s so-called war on terror.
The offensive removed the Taliban from power, but insecurity continues to rise across the Asian country.
Following Saturday’s attacks, Trump called for "decisive action" against the Taliban by “all countries” in Afghanistan.
“This murderous attack renews our resolve and that of our Afghan partners,” he said.
"Now, all countries should take decisive action against the Taliban and the terrorist infrastructure that supports them," Trump said.[ptv]
