Samsung unveils new smartwatch to challenge Apple Watch
KONFRONTASI - South Korea’s electronics giant, Samsung, has unveiled its latest smartwatch in a bid to challenge Apple's global domination in the fast-growing market of wearable devices.
Samsung’s round-faced Gear S2 smartwatch, which was announced on Tuesday, is mounted with a 1.2-inch (30 millimeter) circular screen, allowing for mobile payment and remote control over home appliances.
Those wearing Gear S2 will be also able to make common phone calls and send text messages, AFP reported.
Samsung hopes that the new product will compete with Apple’s similar products, after the US company became the top provider of wearable devices worldwide. Apple launched its smartwatch in April.
The new smartwatch -- the latest model by Samsung since last November -- will be officially released later this month during the IFA trade fair in Berlin.
Samsung has released a set of smartwatches since 2013, but most of them have been met with lukewarm responses from customers.
Apple is now the dominant company in the field of wearable devices. The company shipped about four million smartwatches globally in the second quarter of this year, accounting for about 75 percent of the overall market.
Samsung has come in second by a wide margin, after shipping 400,000 units during the same quarter.[ptv]
